Maternal RSV vaccination reduces infant ICU admissions in England

New data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicates that maternal vaccination against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has significantly reduced infant hospitalizations in England. During the 2025-2026 season, the number of infants under six months old requiring intensive care or high dependency unit attention due to confirmed RSV infections fell by approximately 50% compared to the previous season. Specifically, 63 infants were admitted across 20 monitored NHS hospitals, down from 131 in the prior year.

In Peru, medical specialists are raising concerns regarding the implementation of the national RSV vaccination strategy. While the Ministry of Health has incorporated 102,400 doses for pregnant women between weeks 32 and 36 of gestation, experts from the Peruvian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SPOG) warn that current coverage limits and seasonal focus may exclude many women in need. They recommend expanding the vaccination window from 28 to 36 weeks and ensuring year-round availability to ensure protection is based on pregnancy stage rather than specific campaign periods.
