Maternidad La Altagracia reports 17 newborn deaths in August
The National Health Service (SNS) reported that 17 newborns died between August 1 and August 24 at the Maternidad Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia. Among the deceased, three very premature infants tested positive for multiresistant microorganisms.
The remaining 14 deaths were not linked to these specific microorganisms but were attributed to complex neonatal conditions, including extreme prematurity, congenital anomalies such as gastroschisis and single ventricle congenital heart disease, and pulmonary hypertension.
Reports have indicated the presence of pathogens, including Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella, in various hospital areas such as surgical blocks, the perinatology room, and intensive care units. In response, the SNS has intervened to audit clinical records and established an inter-institutional technical commission to monitor the situation and evaluate infection prevention protocols.
