Maternity care crisis in UK linked to staffing and infrastructure

A new report from MBRRACE-UK indicates that maternal deaths remain at historically high levels, highlighting a critical link between insufficient staffing and patient safety. The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has called for urgent long-term investment, noting that workforce capacity is a primary safety issue as maternity services struggle to meet increasing clinical demands and complex pregnancies.

In response to these crises, the UK government has announced plans to amend the Health Bill to establish England’s first statutory maternity commissioner.
