Maternity rights and support in professional and athletic sectors
Legal and social frameworks are evolving to address the challenges faced by mothers in various professional spheres. In Brazil, Law No. 13.872/2019 guarantees that mothers with children up to six months old have the right to breastfeed during public service examinations. This includes the right to breaks of up to 30 minutes every two hours, with the time being fully compensated, provided the candidate formally declares the need and designates a companion to care for the child in a reserved space.
In the sports sector, particularly in Portugal, efforts are being made to ensure motherhood does not end athletic careers. Law No. 13/2024, initiated by the Socialist Party, provides complementary financial subsidies for athlete mothers. Proposed measures aim to protect sporting status, ensure financial stability during recovery, and recognize maternity periods as useful career time through progressive training plans and individualized support.
