Mateusz Morawiecki resigns as ECR leader amid PiS split
Former Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced he will resign as chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) party, saying he will step down quickly unless asked to stay. His resignation follows his expulsion from the Law and Justice (PiS) party after he and a group of around 30‑40 deputies refused to sign loyalty declarations. Morawiecki’s faction, anchored by the Rozwój Plus association, includes about 40 MPs, one senator and three MEPs who intend to form a separate parliamentary group in the Sejm. The split reduces PiS’s representation to an estimated 140‑145 seats out of 460 and is described as the deepest fracture in the party’s history, weakening its position ahead of the 2027 parliamentary elections. PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński warned that the party has lost its dominance on the right. The ECR party confirmed Morawiecki’s departure and expressed gratitude for his leadership.
