Mateusz Morawiecki launches Rozwój Plus club, widening PiS split
Former prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced the creation of a new parliamentary club called Rozwój Plus, bringing together roughly 40 deputies and one senator. The club was formally registered in the Sejm, making it the third‑largest parliamentary grouping.
Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jarosław Kaczyński had earlier issued an ultimatum requiring party members to renounce any external association by midnight of 23 July 2026. When about 44 MPs linked to Morawiecki’s Rozwój Plus failed to comply, PiS referred their cases to the party’s disciplinary officer, Karol Karski, for individual review rather than immediate expulsion.
Polls conducted after the split show Rozwój Plus could attract around 7 % of the vote, potentially taking 2–3 percentage points from PiS, whose support fell to roughly 17 % in recent surveys. Opposition Civics Coalition and the far‑right Confederation see the fragmentation as an opportunity to gain voters.
Morawiecki also resigned as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) party on 28 July, handing the role to Carlo Fidanza of Brothers of Italy. The internal dispute reshapes the balance of power on the Polish right and is expected to influence the 2027 parliamentary election.
