Mathematical model explains the mechanics of the bird dawn chorus

A new mathematical model developed by Alexander R. Kaye at the University of Warwick provides insight into why birds engage in the dawn chorus, a coordinated burst of song at sunrise.

Using catastrophe theory—a mathematical field explaining how gradual changes can trigger sudden shifts in behavior—the research suggests that the chorus is a chain reaction rather than a complex pre-planned group coordination. The model assigns each bird an individual ‘singing threshold’ based on light levels and the sound of neighboring birds.

As sunlight increases gradually, the first few birds reach their specific thresholds and begin to sing. Their songs then act as additional stimuli for others, causing a rapid spread of singing across the group. Kaye intends to refine the model by incorporating variables such as weather conditions and predator presence.
