OpenAI mathematical manuscript release sparks backlash from mathematicians

OpenAI has released a massive collection of 722 mathematical manuscripts on GitHub, generated by an unreleased internal frontier AI model. The works, organized into 372 result families, cover diverse fields including number theory, algebraic geometry, and theoretical computer science. Some results touch upon high-profile problems such as the Riemann hypothesis.

The release has triggered significant backlash and concern within the global mathematical community. The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) has called for a boycott of OpenAI, urging mathematicians to cease collaboration with the company to protect the core values of human-centered scientific research. Prominent mathematicians, including Fields Medalist Terence Tao, have expressed concerns regarding the speed of AI-generated output versus the human capacity to verify, understand, and absorb these findings.

Technical issues have already emerged. OpenAI retracted three manuscripts due to sign errors and revised others. Furthermore, researchers from the University of Cambridge and King's College London identified discrepancies between the AI's written explanations and the code used for computer-based verification via the Lean tool. Critics argue that the sheer volume of unverified results threatens to disrupt the traditional academic process of peer review and collaborative understanding.
