Mathematicians launch boycott against AI corporations

Approximately 1,000 mathematicians have joined an initiative to limit cooperation with artificial intelligence corporations. The movement follows concerns regarding the influence of companies like OpenAI and Anthropic within the scientific community.

Participants have organized into different groups based on the level of their boycott. Some scientists have signed declarations prohibiting work for AI firms or the use of chatbots for academic writing and lectures. A more radical group, referred to as “vegans,” seeks to completely exclude artificial intelligence from mathematical research.

Concerns driving the boycott include environmental impact, job security, and the integrity of research. Professor Sam Raskin of Yale University has highlighted potential conflicts of interest, noting reports of AI corporations providing undisclosed funding to prominent figures in the mathematical community. Critics argue that mathematics is a human-centric discipline where the process is as vital as the final result, which may be compromised by AI-generated outputs.
