Matheu Station mural honors Argentine historical memory

Two students from Escobar, Selene Melesz and Alex Báez, have transformed the Matheu Station with a mural titled ‘Las raíces de la memoria’ (The Roots of Memory). The artwork, which depicts a tree growing amidst chains and scales, serves as a tribute to the memory of Argentina’s last military dictatorship.

The project was part of the Juegos Bonaerenses 2026 initiative. The students, who attend Escuela Técnica N°1 and participate in the ‘Barrio es Cultura’ workshops, won the municipal stage in the mural discipline, making them the only team from Escobar to qualify for the regional phase.

The mural was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March 24, 1976, coup d'état. The artists chose the station as their canvas to ensure the work is highly visible and accessible to the local community.
