Matheus Nunes accepts right‑back role at Manchester City
Portuguese international Matheus Nunes joined Manchester City as a central midfielder but was repositioned as a right‑back by manager Pep Guardiola. Nunes initially resisted, telling friends “I am not a defender,” and even consulted a psychologist about the change. He later acknowledged the shift, noting that refusing the role could have cost him his opportunity at the club.
During the 2025/26 season Nunes played 49 matches, mostly at right‑back, recording one goal and seven assists. With the arrival of new head coach Enzo Maresca, he continues in the defensive position, having adapted to the role after a difficult adjustment period.
