Mathews Mtumbuka condemns Norman Chisale's political threats

Dr. Mathews Mtumbuka, a senior official and presidential running mate for the United Transformation Movement (UTM), has condemned recent political threats made by Deputy Security Minister Norman Chisale. The confrontation follows a video circulating on social media in which Chisale, a key figure in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), warned UTM members against their political activities.

In the video, Chisale suggested that continued UTM movements could lead to physical confrontations and appealed to traditional leaders to allow him to discipline individuals he accused of causing political disturbances. He reportedly warned that UTM members might be “whipped” if they continued their political touring.

Responding via social media, Mtumbuka dismissed the remarks as a return to the repressive politics of the 1980s. He stated, “This is not 1980s — it’s 2026. No to politics of destruction, damage, death! YES to debate and development!” The exchange has heightened tensions in Malawi as political parties prepare for upcoming electoral contests.
