Mathieu Lévesque named interim leader of Coalition Avenir Québec
Mathieu Lévesque, a former Quebec cabinet minister, has been named the interim leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ). This leadership change follows a significant electoral defeat in the October 5 provincial election, during which the party failed to secure any seats in the National Assembly despite receiving approximately 13% of the vote.
Lévesque replaces former premier Christine Fréchette, who resigned after the party lost its previous dominance of 79 seats. Lévesque, who previously served as the minister responsible for youth and the associate minister responsible for the regions, lost his own seat in the Chapleau riding during the election. He stated that he accepts the responsibility with humility and emphasized that the party must now engage in collective reflection and reconstruction.
