Mathieu Valbuena reflects on the intensity of Olympiacos-Panathinaikos derbies

Former Olympiacos player Mathieu Valbuena has reflected on the intense atmosphere and significance of the derby against Panathinaikos. Speaking to Nova, the French midfielder emphasized that the match against Panathinaikos represents the ‘real derby’ for Olympiacos players.

Valbuena recalled the pressure he felt upon signing with Olympiacos, noting that fans repeatedly warned him, ‘Be careful, you cannot lose to Panathinaikos.’ He described his first derby, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, as a unique experience where the atmosphere was palpable throughout the week despite the empty stadiums. He specifically remembered providing an assist to Youssef El-Arabi during that first home match.
