Mathieu van der Poel may skip cyclocross season due to fatherhood

Professional cyclist Mathieu van der Poel may skip the upcoming cyclocross season as he prepares for fatherhood. Following his bronze medal performance in the road race at the World Championships in Montreal, the Dutch rider has not yet confirmed his plans for the winter 2026/27 season.

Van der Poel and his partner, Roxanne Bertels, are expecting their first child in January. His brother, David van der Poel, indicated that the imminent arrival of the baby is a significant factor in Mathieu’s decision-making process. David noted that the demands of professional cyclocross—including the mental energy and time commitment required beyond the races themselves—may lead Mathieu to prioritize a quiet winter.

A final decision regarding his participation in cyclocross will be made after a period of rest, in consultation with his team, Alpecin, and his sponsors.
