Woman Unknown wins Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival

The 2026 Venice Film Festival concluded with a major sweep for the Danish-led production ‘Woman Unknown’ (Kvinde ukendt). Directed by May el-Toukhy, the film was awarded the Golden Lion, marking a significant achievement for Eurimages-supported European cinema. The film, a post-World War II drama set in Denmark, was the only production by a female director in the official competition.

Lead actress Mathilde Arcel received the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Marie, a housemaid navigating the social consequences of a past relationship with a German soldier. In a rare move, the jury, led by President Maggie Gyllenhaal, voted unanimously to award both the top film prize and the acting prize to the same production.

Following her win, Arcel revealed that she had been receiving unemployment benefits in Denmark and had to briefly return to Copenhagen to report to the labor office during the festival before returning to Venice to accept her award.
