Athens Court rejects leniency for officials convicted in Mati fire

The Athens Court of Appeals has rejected the request for leniency based on previous good conduct for three former officials convicted for their roles in the deadly Mati fire. The defendants include former Fire Service Chief Sotiris Terzoudis, former Deputy Chief Vasilis Matthiopoulos, and former General Secretary of Civil Protection Ioannis Kapakis.

The court's decision follows a ruling by the Supreme Court that finalized the guilt of the three individuals but sent the issue of mitigation back to the Court of Appeals for reconsideration. The prosecutor, Efrosyni Panagiotopoulou, argued that a clean criminal record is insufficient for leniency, noting that the defendants showed indifference to the extreme weather risks and the unfolding tragedy.

The Mati fire, which resulted in 102 deaths and 32 serious injuries, was exacerbated by what the prosecution described as a failure to coordinate resources effectively, with firefighting assets being diverted to other areas like Isthmia and Kineta instead of the fire zone. While Matthiopoulos and Kapakis have already served their sentences and been released, Terzoudis remains imprisoned.
