Mati fire tragedy: Relatives protest potential sentence mitigation for convicted officials
The Association of Relatives of the Deceased and Burn Victims of the July 23, 2018, Mati fire has expressed strong opposition to an upcoming trial at the Court of Appeals scheduled for September 16. The proceedings will focus on whether three convicted individuals—Sotiris Terzoudis, Vasilis Matthiopoulos, and Ioannis Kapakis—are entitled to sentence mitigation based on the principle of 'living a law-abiding life.'
While the Supreme Court of Greece has already ruled their guilt as irrevocable, stating that their actions and omissions caused deaths and permanent injuries, it partially accepted appeals regarding the application of mitigating circumstances. This has prompted outrage among victims' families, who argue that the judicial investigation was incomplete and marred by significant errors and omissions from its earliest stages.
The Association contends that many critical questions remain unanswered and that the initial investigation failed to fully address all responsibilities, including certain burn victims who were not included in the original trial. The families maintain that the concept of mitigation should not be applied in isolation from the defendants' conduct during the tragedy.
