Matic receives FCC exemption from US foreign-made robot ban
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted the Silicon Valley-based company Matic a “conditional approval” to sell its robotic floor cleaner and charging dock in the United States. This makes Matic the first robot vacuum manufacturer to receive an exemption from a recent US ban on foreign-made advanced robots.
The ban, announced in late July, targets new robot vacuums, lawnmowers, and pool cleaners to mitigate risks of spying or sabotage. Under the rule, devices with foreign components exceeding 35% of the total product cost may be restricted. While the ban primarily affects upcoming, unreleased models, Matic’s exemption has no expiration date, providing regulatory certainty for its existing product line and future models.
Matic assembles its products in California, though it utilizes components sourced globally. The FCC's move is part of a broader effort to encourage domestic robot manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign technology, particularly from Asia.
