Matilde Lorenzi: Two years since the death of the Italian athlete

The Italian winter sports community is marking the second anniversary of the death of Matilde Lorenzi, a 20-year-old athlete from the Centro Sportivo Esercito. Lorenzi passed away on October 29, 2024, following a fall during training in Val Senales. An investigation into the causes and potential responsibilities of the incident remains ongoing.

The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) issued a statement expressing deep affection for her family and noting that her memory remains present within the national teams. In her honor, the Matilde Lorenzi Foundation has been established to promote safety culture on ski slopes and to protect young athletes.

Her partner, skicross skier Federico Tomasoni, shared his journey of grief and his decision to continue his athletic career. Despite physical injuries and the emotional toll of her loss, Tomasoni focused on qualifying for the Olympics as a tribute to her memory.
