Matjaž Kek returns as head coach of HNK Rijeka
Matjaž Kek, the most successful coach in HNK Rijeka’s history, has been reappointed to lead the club. In his first spell he oversaw 274 matches and secured the league title, becoming a beloved figure among Rijeka supporters. After an eight‑year absence Kek replaces Victor Sanchez, with fans describing him as a “healer” who can restore the team’s fortunes.
Supporters expressed overwhelming enthusiasm on social media, posting comments such as “One Kek!” and “Welcome back, biggest coach.” The club hopes Kek can rebuild the squad despite the likely sale of several key players, and that new signings backed by owner Mišković will enable a return to former glory.
The appointment marks a new chapter for Rijeka, which struggled in the recent domestic season and missed a title defence, prompting the urgent change in management.
