Matlapa authorities suspend police following death of detainee

Following the death of Fermín Isabel Antonio, residents of Picholco blocked a highway near Jalpilla to protest alleged police abuse. The unrest began after Isabel, who was involved in an accident, was detained by municipal and state officers and subsequently died at the Santa Catarina Hospital due to various injuries.

During the protest, community members detained four police officers and a negotiator. Tensions were resolved after Matlapa Mayor María de Jesús Rivera Rosales met with residents and state officials, including the State Undersecretary of Government and a representative from the State Commission for Victim Assistance.

A formal agreement was signed stipulating that the accused officers be immediately removed from their positions to face criminal investigation by the State Attorney General's Office. Additionally, the agreement includes compensation for the deceased's family, as he was the sole provider for his relatives.
