Mato Grosso Court appoints two new appellate judges amid retirements
On Friday, 24 May, the Tribunal de Justiça de Mato Grosso (TJMT) swore in judges Agamenon Alcântar Moreno Júnior and Antonio Horácio da Silva Neto as new desembargadores. Agamenon, promoted on merit, will serve in Gabinete 1 of the 4th Criminal Chamber, while Antonio Horácio, elevated by seniority, will join Gabinete 3 of the 2nd Criminal Chamber. Their appointments fill the vacancies left by the compulsory retirements of Desembargadores Maria Erotides Kneip and Dirceu dos Santos.
Three days later, on 27 May, Desembargador Sérgio Valério reached the mandatory retirement age of 75, creating an additional seat. The court announced that the most senior first‑instance judge, Abel Balbino Guimarães of Várzea Grande, is the leading candidate to succeed him. TJMT also opened a merit‑based selection process for a female desembargadora to occupy a seat reserved for women judges.
These changes aim to maintain the court’s capacity and address the ongoing need for experienced judges in Mato Grosso’s second‑instance judiciary.
