Mato Grosso Court upholds seizure of Carlinhos Bezerra’s mansion

The Court of Justice of Mato Grosso (TJ-MT) has upheld the seizure of a mansion valued at R$ 7.5 million belonging to businessman Carlos Alberto Gomes Bezerra, known as Carlinhos Bezerra. The seizure serves as a guarantee for unpaid alimony owed to Denise Jorge Machado, the mother of Thays Machado.

Thays Machado was murdered by Bezerra in January 2023 in Cuiabá, alongside her boyfriend, William Cesar Moreno. In July, Bezerra was sentenced to 36 years in prison for the feminicide and the homicide of Moreno. The alimony dispute arose after payments to Machado ceased in December 2023, resulting in arrears of approximately R$ 51.6 thousand.

Bezerra’s defense argued that the mansion should be protected as a family residence, noting that his mother resides there. However, the court rejected these claims. Reporting judge Hélio Nishiyama noted that Bezerra had previously declared the property as part of the capital stock of a private company, a fact that makes the property incompatible with the legal protections reserved for a primary family home.
