Mato Grosso courts approve list of judges and penalize lawyer for fabricated citations

The Plenary of the Tribunal de Justiça de Mato Grosso (TJMT) unanimously approved a list of eleven female judges to compete for the vacant desembargadora seat created by the compulsory retirement of Justice Juvenal Pereira da Silva, who turned 75 in July. In a separate case, the 5th Labor Court of Cuiabá (TRT) fined a lawyer for bad‑faith litigation after she submitted non‑existent jurisprudence to support her client’s defense. The judge, Juliano Girardello, imposed a penalty of 9.9% of the claim value, noting that the fabricated case law and doctrinal citations—some appearing to be generated by artificial‑intelligence tools—violated procedural good faith. The ruling emphasized that responsibility for such misconduct rests solely with the attorney, not the client.
