Mato Grosso cracks illegal wildlife trade and advances environmental regularization legislation

State environmental authorities in Poconé, Mato Grosso, seized about 17 kg of crocodile meat, 5 kg of irregularly caught fish, a long‑barrel .22 rifle and 17 live cartridges. Two suspects were detained and a fine of R$ 14,250 was imposed.

The same week, the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly's Environment, Water Resources and Mineral Resources Committee approved ten projects aimed at streamlining the state's environmental regularization system. The centerpiece is a complementary law to improve the Cadastro Ambiental Rural (CAR) and the Programa de Regularização Ambiental (PRA), giving producers clearer legal certainty and faster licensing. Additional measures include community brigades for forest fire control, incentives for electric and bio‑fuel vehicle fleets, and a reverse‑logistics scheme for recycling.

Both actions are presented as steps to balance agricultural productivity with biodiversity protection and to meet market demands from Europe and Asia.
