Mato Grosso do Sul audiovisual sector expands on Brazil Cinema Day
On June 19, Brazil’s National Cinema Day, the state of Mato Grosso do Sul highlighted a period of rapid growth for its audiovisual industry. Public incentive programmes – notably the Lei Paulo Gustavo, which has channeled more than R$ 20 million to local projects, the state’s Fundo de Investimentos Culturais and the national Política Nacional Aldir Blanc – have boosted production, distribution and professional training.
In 2026 the Fundação de Cultura de Mato Grosso do Sul launched three calls worth a total of R$ 1 million under the Aldir Blanc policy: R$ 100 000 to license 30 recently completed works, R$ 500 000 to produce five new animation shorts, and R$ 400 000 to support participation in national and international festivals. Filmmaker Roberto Leite called the moment “one of the most important periods in the state’s audiovisual history,” while stressing the need for continued funding and timely payment to safeguard the entire supply chain.
The increase in activity is reflected in events such as the Curta Campo Grande festival, which recorded 32 short‑film entries – a sharp rise from the pre‑pandemic average of fewer than five per year. Stakeholders note that the sector’s expansion also fuels tourism, commerce, technology and the broader creative economy in the region.
