Mato Grosso do Sul cattle herd drops 4.3% in one year
The cattle herd in Mato Grosso do Sul decreased by 4.3% in 2025, representing a loss of nearly 800,000 head of cattle compared to the previous year. According to data from the Municipal Livestock Survey (PPM) released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the state ended the year with 17.9 million bovines.
This decline in Mato Grosso do Sul was sharper than the national average, as the Brazilian cattle herd fell by 1.7% to reach 234.3 million head. IBGE attributes the national reduction to an increase in slaughter rates over the last four years, particularly involving females, which limits reproductive capacity and herd replenishment.
Despite the overall decline, Corumbá remains the largest cattle hub in the state, hosting approximately 2.15 million bovines, which accounts for about 12% of the state's total herd. Aquidauana and Ribas do Rio Pardo follow as significant producers.
