Record heat spreads across Brazil’s southern and central states

A heat wave is affecting large parts of Brazil, with maximum temperatures ranging from the low 20s in Paraná to nearly 40 °C in parts of Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Acre. Forecasts for Santa Catarina predict highs of up to 30 °C, while the interior of Mato Grosso do Sul may reach 38 °C and the western region of Goiás up to 38 °C. In the northern state of Acre, temperatures are expected to peak between 33 °C and 36 °C.

Most regions are expected to stay dry, with isolated showers reported only in limited areas such as the southern part of Santa Catarina and some municipalities in Acre. The dry spell has persisted for more than a month in several states, contributing to lowered river levels and heightened fire risk.

Health authorities have issued low‑humidity alerts, noting relative humidity as low as 20 % in parts of Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás. The alerts advise increased fluid intake, limiting outdoor activity during peak heat, and special care for children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions.
