Mato Grosso do Sul prosecutors investigate cattle cruelty in Cassilândia

The Public Ministry of Mato Grosso do Sul has opened a civil inquiry to investigate allegations of animal cruelty involving more than 200 cattle at a rural property in Cassilândia.

Inspections conducted by the Environmental Military Police revealed animals in critical condition, including a heifer found dying from starvation and approximately 20 cattle in an advanced state of emaciation. Authorities also discovered dead animals on the premises. Reports indicate that the herd was concentrated on roughly 23 hectares, an area deemed insufficient for the number of animals, leading to a lack of adequate pasture and nutrition.

This property has been under official monitoring since 2023, when authorities noted the sale of 100 emaciated animals and ordered improved feeding measures. However, subsequent inspections in 2024 and 2025 showed a worsening situation. The Environmental Military Police have issued fines, filed infraction notices, and seized the most severely affected animals. The investigation aims to identify responsible parties and determine if the neglect constitutes a crime under the Environmental Crimes Law.
