Brazil intensifies judicial fight against domestic violence
Brazil is conducting widespread judicial and legislative actions to combat domestic violence, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Maria da Penha Law. The National Council of Justice (CNJ) is coordinating the ‘Justice for Peace at Home Week’ across various states, including Rio de Janeiro, Amazonas, and Bahia. This initiative aims to accelerate legal proceedings, with thousands of hearings and jury trials scheduled to address domestic abuse and feminicide cases.
In Mato Grosso, the Legislative Assembly is hosting webinars to discuss the law's evolution and challenges, while local authorities are working to expand protection networks in smaller municipalities. Regional data highlights the severity of the issue: Mato Grosso reported 27 feminicides in the first half of 2025, and national statistics show 741 feminicides in the first half of 2026, averaging approximately four deaths per day.
Efforts to strengthen support systems include the expansion of the ‘Casa da Mulher Brasileira’ network, which provides integrated 24-hour services. Additionally, specialized discussions are being held to address violence within indigenous communities, particularly in northern Mato Grosso, to ensure protection measures are culturally adapted and accessible.
