Mato Grosso faces challenges in autism support and sensory inclusion
In Mato Grosso, Brazil, the social welfare center Campi in Várzea Grande recently faced a potential shutdown due to unpaid professional fees. While activities resumed following an agreement with the Municipal Education Secretariat to pay R$ 461.9 thousand, the debt remains partially unpaid. An audit by the Mato Grosso Court of Accounts (TCE-MT) revealed that 90.3% of families with autistic children have experienced interruptions in treatment, with over half reporting developmental regression in their children during these gaps.
In response to the needs of neurodivergent individuals, Deputy Denninho Silva has proposed Bill 120/2026 in the Legislative Assembly. The legislation aims to mandate sensory regulation spaces at large-scale public or private events, including concerts, cultural venues, and sporting events. The proposal requires controls on lighting, noise, and sound stimuli, as well as the provision of comfortable furniture and trained staff to assist those with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Sensory Processing Disorder. The bill also mandates that the existence and location of these spaces be communicated clearly and in advance.
