Portugal and Brazil report multiple forest fire incidents and arson arrests

Multiple regions in Portugal and Brazil are reporting various forest fire incidents, ranging from accidental burns to suspected arson.

In Portugal, authorities have detained two men suspected of starting wildfires. One 49-year-old man in Águeda is suspected of multiple ignitions this year, potentially linked to alcoholism and compulsivity. Another 52-year-old man in Vila Nova de Famalicão was detained for allegedly using a lighter to start a fire in Landim for personal reasons.

In Brazil, several incidents have been recorded. In Mato Grosso, a man was caught in the act of starting a fire in the Encontro das Águas State Park, and another fire was extinguished in Cáceres. In Amazonas, a large fire in Maués is being investigated as a suspected intentional act. In Rio Grande do Sul, a fire in Passa Sete, believed to have started from controlled branch burning that spread due to wind, destroyed eucalyptus and wood supplies.

To combat these environmental threats, the Maranhão Military Firefighters are expanding their fleet using R$ 45 million from the Amazon Fund, managed by BNDES, to acquire new trucks, 4x4 vehicles, and specialized equipment.
