Mato Grosso funds new school in Guarantã do Norte and moves to end prison‑ex‑convict transport perks
On 24 June, Deputy Diego Guimarães and Governor Otaviano Pivetta signed a R$10.8 million agreement to build a new state school in the Jardim Araguaia neighbourhood of Guarantã do Norte, Mato Grosso, and to expand classroom capacity. The deal is part of a broader R$110 million package for infrastructure and education across the Vale do Teles Pires and Portal da Amazônia regions. Guimarães said, “Compromisso assumido é compromisso cumprido. Essa escola é muito importante para Guarantã do Norte, porque a demanda por vagas cresceu…”.
In the same legislative session, Deputy Gilberto Cattani introduced Bill 800/2026, which would prohibit state‑funded free public‑transport benefits granted solely on the basis of being a former inmate. The proposal sets eligibility criteria such as low income, disability, age, student status, health needs or social vulnerability, and requires any benefit to disclose its funding source and financial impact. Cattani said, “Não queremos que um cidadão que é egresso do sistema prisional tenha vantagem sobre outro cidadão de bem”.
