Mato Grosso health officials address indigenous healthcare gaps
Health officials in Mato Grosso are addressing critical deficiencies in indigenous healthcare services. Reports from the region highlight inadequate medical conditions for indigenous patients, including a lack of essential medicines, healthcare professionals, and proper infrastructure.
To address these systemic issues, the Council of Municipal Health Secretariats of Mato Grosso (Cosems/MT) is organizing its first thematic meeting dedicated specifically to indigenous health. The goal is to bring together managers and institutions to define responsibilities and improve coordination between municipalities, the state, the federal government, the Indigenous Health Secretariat (Sesai), and Special Indigenous Sanitary Districts (DSEIs).
Key challenges identified include the lack of integrated information systems, which hinders the tracking of vital indicators such as vaccination rates and maternal health. Improving primary care, service regulation, and ensuring respect for the cultural particularities of indigenous peoples are central to the proposed improvements within the Unified Health System (SUS).
