Mato Grosso initiatives target domestic violence barriers
New legislative initiatives in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso aim to reduce the barriers faced by victims of domestic violence through legal and financial support.
The Court of Justice of Mato Grosso do Sul has proposed a measure to the Legislative Assembly that would grant total exemption from court costs and judicial fees for victims of domestic violence. Unlike current regulations that require proof of financial hardship, this proposal suggests that the status of being a victim is sufficient evidence of vulnerability. The exemption would cover essential legal actions such as divorce, child custody, alimony, and asset division.
In a separate initiative, State Deputy Dr. João has introduced a resolution at the Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso (ALMT) to promote financial independence. Resolution No. 10.633/2025 mandates that at least 8% of outsourced service positions within the Assembly be reserved for women experiencing domestic violence. This measure is designed to provide the economic means necessary for victims to leave abusive relationships, with implementation coordinated through victim assistance agencies and the Assembly's Women's Attorney's Office.
