Mato Grosso Judiciary Expands Multiparental and Paternity Recognition

Judge Yago da Silva Sebastião explained that Brazil's legal system permits multiparentality, allowing a person to be registered with more than one father or mother when genuine socio‑affective ties are proven. A CNJ provision enables these registrations directly at civil registries without a court case, and the recognition grants all rights of filiation, including inheritance, support and family life, with no age limit for claimants.

The Mato Grosso judiciary provides permanent, free services for paternity recognition through the CEJUSC network. The program, part of the "Pai Presente" initiative, offers voluntary, DNA‑tested, and socio‑affective paternity recognition, with monthly DNA collections and mediation to expedite cases. These measures aim to strengthen family bonds, ensure citizenship rights, and simplify access to legal identity for children and adults alike.
