Mato Grosso law mandates adapted cinema sessions for autism

Mato Grosso has implemented Law No. 13.256/2026, which mandates that cinemas within the state host at least one adapted monthly screening specifically for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families.

Authored by State Deputy Sebastião Rezende, the legislation aims to reduce sensory triggers that can make conventional movie theaters challenging for neurodivergent individuals. The law requires several specific environmental adjustments during these sessions, including reduced sound volume, dimmed lighting rather than total darkness, and the prohibition of commercial advertisements. Additionally, spectators are granted the freedom to enter or exit the theater as needed.

To assist with identification, establishments must display the international symbol for autism at the entrance of the designated screening rooms. Following its sanction in March, businesses were granted a 90-day period to comply with the new regulations.
