Mato Grosso municipalities boost primary health care with new programs

The municipal health secretaries of Primavera do Leste and Alta Floresta in Brazil's Mato Grosso state are expanding primary health care initiatives. Primavera do Leste joined the state‑run "Juntos pela Saúde Plena MT" program, which aims to qualify basic health units, monitor indicators, reward high‑performing teams, and fund new facilities. The municipality will develop a joint action plan for the second half of the year to improve access and preventive care.

Alta Floresta was selected to represent Mato Grosso at a national health congress after its anti‑smoking program was recognized for delivering home‑based cessation services to bedridden and wheelchair‑bound patients. The city also featured in a Fiocruz‑published book highlighting successful SUS practices and was noted for regional cooperation that increased access to elective surgeries for nearby municipalities.

Both initiatives emphasize strengthening primary care, improving equity, and reducing the need for more complex health interventions in the region.
