Mato Grosso officials discuss Tax Reform challenges

The Mato Grosso State Finance Secretariat (Sefaz-MT) participated in the III Mato Grosso Tax Law Congress, organized by the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-MT), to discuss the challenges posed by Brazil’s Tax Reform.

During the event, Finance Secretary Fábio Pimenta addressed the transition of federalism and the creation of the Goods and Services Tax (IBS) Management Committee. He noted that the reform has entered a new phase focused on building regulatory norms and operational preparation. This transition will require significant adaptations in systems, processes, and obligations for states, municipalities, taxpayers, and legal professionals.

Pimenta highlighted specific concerns for Mato Grosso due to its economic profile as a major commodity producer and its recent industrialization. He noted that the shift toward destination-based taxation and the reduction of state autonomy regarding tax incentives will require careful attention to the economic, geographic, and logistical differences between Brazilian regions.
