Mato Grosso ordered to pay fines for hospital safety failures
The State of Mato Grosso has been ordered by the Labor Court to pay R$ 300,000 in collective moral damages and R$ 90,000 in accumulated fines due to safety failures at the Hospital Regional de Rondonópolis Irmã Elza Giovanella.
The ruling follows a Public Civil Action initiated by the Labor Public Ministry, which has been monitoring the facility's structural and safety conditions since 2017. Despite previous notifications from the Fire Department and judicial injunctions, the hospital failed to regularize its Fire Safety and Panic License (ASCIP).
The court determined that the lack of certification poses a continuous risk to the physical integrity of public servants, outsourced workers, and patients. The state must also regularize the necessary safety documentation to comply with the sentence.
