Mato Grosso Public Defender Office promotes access to justice on World Law Day
On July 10, World Law Day, the Public Defender Office of the State of Mato Grosso highlighted its role in guaranteeing access to justice for people in vulnerable situations. The institution provides free legal assistance across a wide range of areas, including health, family, housing, consumer rights, childhood and youth, criminal defence, penal execution, civil registration and protection of vulnerable groups.
Defender Kamila Souza Lima, a criminal lawyer focusing on domestic violence cases in Cuiabá, explained that laws on paper are insufficient without professional advocacy. She emphasized that effective legal representation helps prevent wrongful imprisonment, ensures appropriate sentencing, and protects individuals from exaggerated accusations.
The Defensoria also engages in collective actions, dialogue with public agencies, and legal education to inform citizens about their rights and how to exercise them. Its activities aim to transform abstract legal guarantees into concrete protections for individuals and communities.
