Mato Grosso Public Defender secures release for two illegally detained men

The Public Defender's Office of the State of Mato Grosso (DPEMT) has secured the release of two individuals who were held in custody due to legal irregularities and lack of evidence.

In one case, a 30-year-old man was released after being detained for approximately 30 days for a crime that had already reached its statute of limitations in September 2024. The incident involved an attempted homicide from 2014 in Poxoréu. The Mato Grosso Court of Justice recognized the detention as “manifest illegal constraint” and issued a release order.

In a separate case in Tapurah, a 26-year-old man was released after 167 days of illegal imprisonment. He had been accused of attempting to poison a neighbor with cachaça. However, forensic reports later confirmed that no toxic or pharmacological substances were present in the beverage samples. The court granted a habeas corpus petition, acknowledging the illegality of the detention following the absence of material evidence.
