Mato Grosso Public Defender's Office establishes new oversight group
The Public Defender's Office of the State of Mato Grosso (DPMT) has established a new Strategic Collective Rights Action Group (Gaedic) specifically focused on the socio-educational system. Led by coordinator Alysson Costa Ourives, the group is tasked with conducting periodic inspections of detention and semi-liberty units, the Socio-educational System's vacancy center, and specialized adolescent police stations throughout the state.
The group aims to address critical issues such as overcrowding, inadequate facilities, poor nutrition, and limited access to healthcare. The initiative seeks to provide comprehensive and free legal assistance to vulnerable populations across various regions, including Cuiabá, Barra do Garças, Rondonópolis, Sinop, and Cáceres.
In a separate effort to strengthen institutional support, the DPMT also met with the state's governor-elect, Gisela Simona. During this meeting, the office presented its performance metrics—noting over 648,000 services provided between January and October—and discussed partnerships to support vulnerable groups, including waste pickers, indigenous communities, and quilombolas.
