Mato Grosso stakeholders address invasive species and wildlife conservation

Agricultural producers and entities in Mato Grosso are seeking coordinated measures to control wild boar populations. As an invasive exotic species, wild boars are causing significant damage to crops, threatening livestock, and impacting local ecosystems. Representatives from the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of Mato Grosso met in Araputanga and Cáceres to discuss population control methods, emphasizing the need for unified procedures, clearer guidelines, and legal security for those managing the species under Ibama regulations.

In a separate environmental initiative in northern Mato Grosso, conservation efforts for the critically endangered Mato Grosso zogue-zogue primate are being linked to economic opportunities. Through the work of Instituto Ecótono and Proteção Animal Mundial, small producers are developing forest corridors that combine native trees with harvestable plants. This agroforestry approach, supported by Embrapa seedlings, aims to connect forest fragments while providing income through plant sales and primate observation tourism.
