Mato Grosso women's prison inmates publish poetry in reading remission project
During a virtual training session on March 3, women incarcerated at the Cáceres Female Public Prison in Mato Grosso presented poems derived from their own life stories. The poems were created through the project “Remição pela Leitura: eu, leitora de mundo dentro dos muros,” a partnership of the Mato Grosso State Court of Justice, the State Secretariat of Education and the State Secretariat of Justice.
The initiative, inspired by writer Carolina Maria de Jesus, guided participants through reading, reflection, personal narrative writing, and transformation of those narratives into poetry with the aid of artificial‑intelligence tools. One poem, attributed to “E. S. Freitas,” declared, “Esta é minha voz ecoando entre muros que tentam calar, mas não consegue.” The event was coordinated by auxiliary judge Pierro de Faria Mendes and aims to support sentence remission through literacy and cultural expression.
