Mato Hiroshige Museum in Tochigi features traveling ukiyo-e exhibition and Kengo Kuma design lecture

The Mato Hiroshige Museum (馬頭広重美術館) in Tochigi Prefecture is supporting a traveling exhibition at the Kawakamizumi Museum of Art (鹿沼市立川上澄生美術館). The show, titled “Kiyochika and Anji’s Tokyo Landmarks,” displays ukiyo‑e woodblock prints by Kobayashi Kiyochika and his disciple Inoue Anji, highlighting the artists’ use of light and shadow. The exhibition runs from 13 December 2024 to 12 January 2025.

In a related cultural event, architect Kengo Kuma gave a special lecture at the museum’s welfare centre, coinciding with the “Kengo Kuma Architecture Exhibition: The Road to Mato Hiroshige Museum,” which is on view until 13 September. Kuma discussed the museum’s design concept, emphasizing the dialogue of light and shadow, the entrance’s relationship to a nearby shrine, and technical details such as the aluminium cladding of the roof panels.
