Matosinhos seeks technological hub at former Galp refinery

The Matosinhos Municipality is seeking to host one of the technological hubs for the upcoming Porto Innovation and Technology Community (PITCH). The proposal suggests utilizing a 40-hectare plot at the former Galp refinery in Leça da Palmeira, which is designated for a university campus.

Originally conceived as a collaboration between the Porto municipality, the University of Porto, and the Technical University, the PITCH project has expanded to a metropolitan scale following a meeting of the Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP). The initiative aims to create an innovation and knowledge hub by 2029, integrating universities, research centers, companies, and municipalities.

The Maia municipality is also competing for the project, having already made land available for a Science and Technology park. While the initial investment for PITCH was estimated at 900 million euros, the final figure remains undetermined as more municipalities, higher education institutions, and business entities join the project.
