Matrix communication standard expands across European public sector

Matrix-based messaging tools are seeing increased adoption among European government agencies as part of a strategic push for digital sovereignty. At the Matrix Conference in Malmö, Sweden, it was reported that there are currently 65 national and international-scale deployments of the decentralized communication standard.

A primary driver for this shift is the desire to reduce dependency on US-based technology providers and gain greater control over sensitive communication data. This concern follows instances where access to proprietary services was restricted for political reasons.

The European Commission is currently equipping approximately 40,000 employees with the Element client to complement existing platforms like Microsoft Teams. Other notable implementations include France’s Tchap app, used by over 400,000 civil servants, and Germany’s BwMessenger for the Bundeswehr and TI-Messenger for the healthcare sector. While interest is growing, the transition remains gradual as organizations often run Matrix-based tools alongside established proprietary software due to the complexity of full replacement.
