Matsutake mushrooms reappear in Polish forests
The rare matsutake mushroom (Tricholoma matsutake) has been documented in Poland following years of absence. While once thought to have disappeared from the country, confirmed sightings occurred in the Zawoja area in 2021 and in the Małopolska region in 2023.
Highly valued in Asia for its unique aroma—often described as a blend of cinnamon, pine resin, and spices—the mushroom grows in association with pine trees on poor, sandy soils. Although its intense scent is a primary reason for its high market value, it is noted that the aroma can be polarizing for some consumers.
